Chrome is now less greedy in RAM on PC, & Mac..

Post by sanjay kumar »

Google's browser continues to struggle against its historical gluttony. Its developers have introduced a series of new approaches and improvements aimed at reducing its consumption of RAM, energy or saving loading time.

Google's browser has a well-deserved reputation for being extremely memory intensive. Engineers at the Mountain View giant have tried several approaches to correct this problem, one of which was dropped in Chrome 85 .

But the latest version of Chrome (89), which has been rolled out gradually since the start of the month, provides a new solution.

Called PartitionAlloc, this tool improves the way RAM allocation is managed for the Windows 64-bit version.

Google announces that its browser processes now consume 22% less RAM, the rendering engine reduces its memory requirement by 8%, while the graphics processor is also less used (3%).

In addition, Google than Chrome should be more responsive, with a latency reduced by around 9%.

However, optimizing the use of your PC's memory resources also means increasing the browser's ability to free up RAM.

Thus, unused resources, such as a large image, are erased from memory faster, so that it can be reassigned to other items.

This change is also applied to tabs that are not active, which, according to Google, frees up to 100MB of RAM per tab.

This improvement in RAM management for inactive tabs was also implemented in Chrome version 89 for macOS.

The browser would be up to 8% more saving in RAM. The energy consumption of tabs would also be optimized on Macs, with an improvement of 65%.

Obviously, Google did not forget to take care of Chrome on Android. It thus introduces a function called Freeze-Dried Tabs, which accelerates the launch speed of the browser.

It actually allows open tabs to be kept in the form of a light version, which can be scrolled, on which we can zoom and where it is even possible to activate links.

This light tab allows you to get a responsive page up to 13% faster...
