A new free-to-air satellite bouquet is to launch in South Africa on May 1.

PremiumFree has lined up an 18 channel package that will broadcast via Intelsat IS20 (68.5 degrees East). Test transmissions are already underway.

Backed by a leading African digital content distributor and channel brand AfricaXP, the bouquet launched in Ghana in 2018 and in Nigeria a year later via SES. It also has a 23 channel package that’s beamed across Eastern and Southern Africa via Eutelsat.

“Broadcasting unencrypted not only means that the service can be offered free of charge, but it also means that the channels can be instantly received on dishes and decoders already owned, installed and connected”, said Craig Kelly, CEO, AfricaXP. “It’s all about instant reach for us and with no extra equipment or cost for the viewer”.

The 18 channel package includes BongoTV (Tanzanian Swahili movies); True African (General Entertainment); Sports Connect (sports news) and Riverwood (Kenyan movies and series).
