WhatsApp wants to secure your conversations saved on iCloud and Google Drive

Post by Gohel Manish »

The messaging application is preparing a solution to encrypt and protect user conversations, saved on iCloud and Google Drive.

WhatsApp wants to secure the backups of your conversations in the cloud by encrypting them and protecting them with a password.

Until now, while conversations held within the app are end-to-end encrypted, chats saved to iCloud (iPhone) or Google Drive (Android) are not.

Their security and protection is the responsibility of the platforms that store them. But things should change soon.

As previously announced, @WhatsApp is working on cloud backups encryption.

The chat database and media will be safe from unauthorized access when using a password. The password is private and it's not sent to WhatsApp.

WABetaInfo reports, screenshots confirming, that the messaging application is working on a solution to encrypt conversations stored in the cloud with a password.

Users will therefore very soon be able to secure their online backup by encrypting them with a password which will be made mandatory when the user wishes to restore their backup after reinstalling WhatsApp on a new smartphone, for example.

If the addition of a protective password prevents anyone from accessing the conversations saved in the cloud, the heads in the air will have to take care of their backs.

If they forget the password, they will not be able to restore the backup to their device and all saved conversations will be permanently lost.

In recent weeks, WhatsApp has suffered a real storm after the implementation of its new privacy policy.

The messaging application has multiplied reassuring messages to remind its users that all conversations held within the application are encrypted, thus preventing any possibility of reading the content of their messages, or listening to their conversations.
