Microsoft updates its minimum requirements and leaves many PCs in the cold...

Post by sanjay kumar »

The system requirements for installing Microsoft's new operating system are very demanding and risk leaving machines that are 3 or 4 years old on the tile.

While Microsoft introduced Windows 11 a few days ago, there are many questions about the minimum requirements for its installation.

First, Microsoft indicated that Windows 11 would be installable only on machines equipped with recent Intel and AMD processors, and only for machines equipped with TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module), a cryptographic security standard.

These prerequisites, which meant that a large number of 3 or 4 year old machines were going to be left behind, had made many users shudder.

But Microsoft had published in parallel another list of possible configurations ( Hard floor and Soft floor ) on its support pages.

They hinted that smaller machines might be eligible, which was enough to allay initial fears.

An invitation to renew the equipment?

Microsoft eventually removed this information to revert to its original minimum configuration. In other words, if your computer is not equipped with an Intel or AMD processorlisted in Microsoft's list, Windows 11 will not be able to be installed on your machine.

For users running Intel, it is therefore imperative to have an 8th generation or higher chip.

For AMD users, Windows 11 will run on Ryzen 2000 and higher chips as well as second generation or higher EPYC processors.

Countless processors a little older, yet compatible with TPM 2.0 and technically capable of running Windows 11 are therefore left behind ... for no real apparent reason.

A good way to rejuvenate the PC fleet? Owners of a high-end machine purchased 4 or 5 years ago will appreciate it.

In the meantime, they will be able to have fun by continuing to benefit from Windows 10 updates ... until 2025...
